Canson Baryta Photographique Review and Additional Thoughts

AudioBlog

Here is a quick informal review of a new offering by Canson, Baryta Photographique 310 gsm… this paper exhibits many of the qualities of a air dried darkroom print but how does it compare to other Baryta papers tested here at Indian Hill Imageworks. Give a listen…

Premium Inkjet Paper Tests Epson 9900

AudioBlogThe audio portion of this post contains my thoughts and test information on the following papers:

  • Crane Silver Rag
  • Canson Platine Fibre Rag
  • Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta
  • Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Pearl

Gamut projections of tested papers in Chromix Color Think.

IHIW_9900PaperTestsSept2009

All tests were done on the Epson 9900 using RIP and profiling software by Ergosoft.

Bad batch numbers for Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta 315 gsm:

  • 601.098-A
  • 601.099-A
  • 601.100-A
  • 601.208-A
  • 601.211-A

Note: As I mentioned in the audio portion of this post the new batch of paper supplied to me by Hahnemuhle is perfect and the issue of the black specs has now been corrected from what I can see. I was informed that the issue was “fixed” back in May/ June but unfortunately the bad stock does still exist so check before you buy!

Putting It All Together

Everything I post here on the Figital Revolution is- in one way or another- part of a test I am running for my own Artworks, or for a client at Indian Hill Imageworks. Over the last few months I have been testing the Olympus XA, the LOMO LCA, the Olympus XA 4, Kodak Ektar 100, alternative printing paper, perfecting my carry solution (BBB) and new methods for hanging artwork. Now it is time to put everything into action! I am leaving for Italy italianflagin a few days (note the Italian Flag) and all of the works and testing will finally get full use. Below is a new image I just made called Winter Leaves, Vermont. 2009. It is made using the Olympus XA 4 using an in-camera multi exposure, overlapping-negative technique I have been refining for the last few months. The film: Kodak Ektar 100…I am taking 40 rolls of it with me to Italy! The paper/ image: printed on an uncoated sheet of Arches Rough 22″ x 30″, 640 gsm as a d’Vinci Print (12 color).

Note: I am about to test a similar style paper with some different sizing properties made by Fabriano… since my new  artworks will be from Italy it only seemed right to look at Italian paper. Hey, they’ve been making paper for over 700 years… they have to be doing something right!

Poll question: What is your favorite paper? Please note I have left out the Arches Platine as it is not currently available for purchase and the poll below is for Matt surface papers only. If your favorite paper is not listed please just click other and then type it in! I have listed what I feel is a good sample of true fine art papers…your vote counts! (You can vote for more than one.)

Canson/ Arches Platine Fiber Rag vs ?

I’m almost finished testing this material but I could not help but post a bit of a preview! The inner projection is an icc. made for an Epson 7880/ 9880 on a premium quality photo white gloss digital art paper…the outer wire frame projection is the new Canson/ Arches Platine Fiber Rag icc. made on our d’Vinci Printer. The difference is HUGE. On new machines from Epson, Canon and HP this paper will rock!

Oh yeah…did I forget to mention that the surface is beautiful as well?! Stay tuned!
