the scanner already exists but at a big price, about $40K… there is a desperate need for a new generation of scanners up to say 4×5 at a “reasonable” price…. say fully featured at under $5K…. that is a lot but a lot less than $40K or $20K for an Imacon… most people have no idea how much detail and tone is in their film as they live in a world of crappy scans…
Preach it. Though it’s quite possible to get a used Imacon for under $5000, but that’s still too expensive for me at the moment. It’s sad that prosumer scanning technology peaked and then ended like 10 years ago now. I’m hearing some interesting things coming from the homebrew section of the internet, so who knows what the future holds!
fun sight to visit…. http://www.largeformatphotography.info/scan-comparison/
I have a Imacon 646 in the studio and with proper workflow it is quite nice… but a lot is how you run it. I am looking forward to seeing results from the epson pro 850 as it is affordable and based on my V750 quite nice for LF negs….
I remember reading that a while back. Site must be down right now…
As far as Epson goes, I’m not impressed by much that I’ve seen, read, or experienced. And from that I’ve read about the V850, the only major difference is the glass plate on the negative carrier, which wouldn’t do anyone shooting 4×5 a whole lot of good.
Let’s do some math here: 8000×12000=96MP. All they have to do is make an 8000dpi scanner and 35mm is still on top 🙂
