Kodak Zi8 Review- Introduction

Kodak Zi8 With Sony Mic Attachment

I’m about to start an extensive test of the new Kodak Zi8 which is due out next month. From my first tests this is a huge improvement on the Zi6 and perfect for my video recordings here on FR. One feature I love is the mic input with adjustable record level… this is huge as most internal mics are Mono and a bit noisy to say the least… so I got a little carried away.

Here is the rig I made using existing parts- a nice setup as I get a 90 degree and 120 degree stereo recording that when matched to the visual is a nice small package. My more in-depth review will be in a week or two but all videos from here on will be recorded on this setup… with and without the rather (ahem) phallic mic.

  1. Can you post the materials you used and some more pictures? I just bought one and I’m excited about the possibilities! thank you!

  2. Stephen,

Do you think the Kodak will have “legs”? Do you think they can compete with the Flip HD? I’m about ready to buy one of these types of video recorders, but don’t want to be stuck with something that gets dropped from their lineup.

Thanks, in advance, for your thoughts.

    1. Paul- I think the new Kodak Zi8 is the best out there as of right now.. the shelf life of these devices is rather short and I would expect Fiip to come out with something to compete with the Kodak as as of now I think the Kodak is the best I have seen and the mic input is fantastic! That being said the Kodak is a bit larger but I just slip in my pocket with no issues… walked around NYC this last weekend this way and it was perfect.

      Cheers-
      Stephen

  3. Stephen,

Excellent…You’re probably right…one will continue to evolve and leapfrog…Glad to hear it worked out well…and I will pick this one up.

    Best,

    Paul

p.s. Anxious to hear what the NY trip was about :-).

    1. I second Diego’s question. Can you post the materials you used to get your mic mounted underneath? Love that setup.

      Cheers,
      Matt

      1. hello! is this a good mic for interviews at large conferences? or do you think the noise would overpower it? thanks for your help!

  4. I love that mic. I’ve been using it for many years. I have an old SD camera (Sony TRV-17) and I cannot adjust recording levels. This mic has always been reliable for ANY audio needs that I’ve had, especially for live music. As Stephan mentioned above – for capturing clear dialogue in a noisy environment, of course a good shotgun is ideal. But for everything else, I highly recommend this $100 mic. (I don’t work for Sony, nor do I sell them.) 🙂

  5. Hey, id like to know what adapter youre using between cam and mic??? also id like to know if i could still mount my monopod under the cam? please help me out.

    thank you! 🙂
